Coolant freezes at only -12.9C? Must be pre-mixed in some thin ratio..

I thought that was kind of high too

That is wrong. Freeze point varies depending on mixture ratio and type of coolant used. I’m using the term coolant interchangeably with antifreeze because modern engines don’t use coolant per se. Typically the freeze point is somewhere between -50F and 0F. Depending on geography and local weather patterns anything above -15F to 0F is considered bad.

Aside from the coolant temp thing, the air fuel ratio is oversimplified. A gasoline ICE are typically capable of running anywhere between 9:1 and 20:1 (though barely, rough, and dangerously), while 14.7:1 has been considered ideal for a long time. But now modern DI engines are often running as lean as 20:1 and doing so smoothly and safely.

IF you buy it un-mixed it denmark, it says on the tin, mix 50/50 for -30C and 3 to 1 for -20C or so i believe. Of course, buying pre-mixed in the south will get you something that’s just mixed for the lows you get there, which could be -12C, that seems resonable. Just like you get washer fluid with different freezing points depending on if it’s winter or summer here. It’s true enough, but not a “one rule covers all”. Also yeah, coolant is a bit misleading, but we get the same confusion here in denmark.

Having never lived in a warm climate or southern state I never considered that you could get pre-mixed with different ratings. That would make sense, there are many places in the world where the temperature never gets below freezing.
